On October 17, during “Ahead of COP 29” roundtable in Yerevan, UN Climate Program Senior Advisor Diana Harutyunyan discussed how the UN Development Program (UNDP) supports Armenia’s climate agenda.
Since 1995, the UNDP has assisted Armenia in enhancing transparency, accountability, and developing its climate policies. Armenia’s stance under the Paris Agreement is reflected in its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), updated in 2021. These commitments are reviewed every five years to address emerging challenges and meet Paris Agreement requirements, with greenhouse gas limitations and reductions being the primary focus.
Diana Harutyunyan highlighted the importance of reducing energy poverty in Armenia through energy efficiency and conservation efforts. Addressing climate risks and adaptation is crucial for the nation’s sustainable development. Armenia’s first National Adaptation Program, created in 2021, assessed vulnerabilities in five sectors, documenting key areas needing intervention. Notably, an adaptation program for the water sector was also approved by the government.
Diana Harutyunyan emphasized that climate change damages often lead to security concerns. For instance, after heavy rainfall on May 26, critical railway lines were damaged, disrupting fuel and wheat transport—essential supplies for the country. Such incidents underline the need to prioritize timely investments for managing climate-related risks.
