Yerevan Adopts Its Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan
At its session held on February 10,  Yerevan Municipality approved Yerevan’s new Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan (SECAP). The plan was adopted with 38 votes in favor, 8 against, and 13 abstentions.

During the session, Yerevan Mayor Tigran Avinyan noted that the lead Standing Committee on Urban Development and Land Use, designated by the Mayor, had issued a positive conclusion regarding the draft decision “On Approving Yerevan's Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan.”

As a member of the European Union’s Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy initiative, Yerevan has committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2030. The Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan was developed to achieve this target. The Plan includes mitigation and adaptation measures in key sectors, including public transport, municipal buildings, street lighting, waste management, water supply systems, and green spaces. The document was developed with the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) under the “Climate Promise – From Pledge to Impact” program.

According to the official website of Yerevan Municipality, the adoption of the Plan enables the application of “green” financial instruments for the implementation of various urban sustainable development initiatives.

“In the context of global environmental challenges, one of the priorities of the municipal authorities is the integration of sustainable development principles into various urban governance infrastructures. This was formally consolidated when, in 2017, the Republic of Armenia ratified the Paris Agreement, committing to limit its emissions and enhance measures to adapt to the impacts of climate change. Yerevan’s Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan was developed within the framework of the city’s membership in the European Commission’s Covenant of Mayors initiative. The objective of the SECAP is to identify measures for mitigating and adapting to the impacts of climate change. The Plan will propose implementation mechanisms, timelines, costs, responsible bodies, expected results, as well as tools for continuous monitoring of progress and evaluation of achievements,” the statement reads.
