A documentary about the closedown and rehabilitation of the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant and “Nairit” production: secret reports, protocols and decrees of the USSR government and the Armenian SSR, the conclusions of the interdepartmental committee of the Armenian SSR, the decrees of the Armenian Government, the Armenian SSR political leaders’ memoirs, the Armenian political leaders’ public speeches, analysis and conclusions.

‘For more than 20 years the state bodies have been advocating that the green movement in Armenia brought to the closedown of the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant, “Nairit” and other strategic objects and these very facts aroused economic dislocation and energy crisis, deforestation, drastic decrease in Lake Sevan level etc. All this caused mass migration out of Armenia. This is misinformation conducted at state level”. This statement was made by Hakob Sanasaryan, Chairman of the Greens Union in Armenia, during his interview with EcoLur.  Under him, the authorities have several aims: first, the government seeks to conceal the actual causes of everything having brought to deterioration of the environmental and social situation in Armenia, particularly, to conceal their own actions aimed at plundering national wealth. Secondly, the authorities try to hinder public activists coming forward against overdevelopment of natural resources, corruption etc through projecting an enemy image and directing people’s dissatisfaction to public movement.

“The main fact should be mentioned: a small group of people got rich parallel with drastic population impoverishment thus setting up an oligarchic governance system tied with economic, political and other interests,” Sanasaryan said.

In terms of the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant, he said: “The construction of a new Armenian Nuclear Power Plant is in progress on the spot of the old one which is far more powerful. This is a private enterprise that will sell energy excess and make profit. Our government is not entitled to run business, and consequently only taxes will be levied to the budget, but not the profit made from Armenian Nuclear Power Plant operation.  Meanwhile the state is to bear responsibility for security of nuclear objects for hundreds and thousands of years. Let them tell us what the expected tax revenue from Armenian Nuclear Power Plant operation is and which part will be directed to ensuring security of all existing nuclear objects?”

Hakob Sanasaryan said that in 2005 he made a detailed substantiation in the open letter submitted by the Greens Union in Armenia. He provided the letter to us and emphasized that this message is still up-to-date, moreover, it is even more topical in terms of economic development policy run by the Armenian authorities.
