Seismic Hazard and Risk of Tolors, Spandaryan and Tatev Reservoir Dams Assessed by Institute of Geological Sciences of NAS RA

Researchers at Institute of Geological Sciences of NAS RA conducted research to assess the seismic hazard and risk of Spandaryan, Tatev and Tolors reservoir dams on Vorotan River in Syunik Region, Armenia.

The works were carried out in cooperation with "Georisk Research Company" CJSC and, "Armenian Association of Seismology and Physics of Earth" within the framework of "Characterization of Vorotan Cascade Fracture and Assessment of Seismic Hazards" project commissioned by Contour Global CJSC. The research is led by Mikael Gevorgyan, PhD in Geological Sciences.

The tectonic structure and faults of Vorotan cascade area were studied, the seismotectonic model of the study area was built, and the maximum magnitude of the earthquake caused by the faults was estimated. This is where the southern segment of Armenia's most active Pambak-Sevan-Syuniq fault intersects, which assumes a high level of seismic hazard, the assessment of which and the consequent seismic risk reduction is considered extremely important, as Informational-Analytical Service of NAS RA informs.
