The fertile lands of Verin Getashen, Nerkin Getashen, and Madina villages in Martuni consolidated community of Gegharkunik Region have turned into uncultivated areas due to the operation of "Argitchi" small hydropower plant (SHPP). The SHPP is built in the Sevan Lake basin on the Argitchi River, which flows into Lake Sevan. It is operated by "Hydro Corporation" CJSC.
The Argitchi River is home to endemic fish species characteristic of the Sevan Lake basin, some of which are red-listed in Armenia. The SHPP exposes a negative impact on these species, threatening their survival and potentially leading to the extinction of certain types.
In the video, residents describe the damage caused to their lands as a result of the SHPP's operation. Experts and local government representatives discuss the need for the company utilizing water resources to adopt social and corporate responsibility practices.
The video was produced with financial support from the Media Initiatives Center under the "Expanding Production of Independent Content" grant project.
