500 Hectares of Forest to Be Established in Shirak Region

“My Forest Armenia” organization will establish 500 hectares of forest on community lands in Armenia’s Shirak Region over the next four years. The planting activities will be followed by maintenance and replanting work to ensure the survival and long-term viability of the saplings. The organization announced the initiative on its official platforms.

According to the organization’s official website, a five-year operational partnership agreement has been signed with the Environmental Project Implementation Unit (EPIU) of Armenia’s Ministry of Environment.

The cooperation is being implemented within the framework of “Fueling Green Recovery in Armenia – advancing forest infrastructure and creating sustainable jobs for rural communities” project funded by the Green Climate Fund (GCF).

The project envisages forest restoration activities and the establishment of pilot agroforestry systems in Shirak Region. Tree planting is scheduled to begin in autumn 2026.

The initiative will also include pilot agroforestry projects in selected communities. In particular, plans include the introduction of windbreak belts, mixed-crop cultivation systems, and silvopastoral practices that combine forest and pasture management.

According to the project developers, these approaches could help improve the condition of agricultural lands and pastures while increasing soil productivity.

The organization notes that the program is especially important for areas where pastures are overgrazed, forcing livestock to graze in forested areas as well. Through improved grazing management and the introduction of adapted systems, the project aims to reduce pressure on forests and improve pasture quality.
