10 Communities in Shirak and Aragatsotn Regions Will Combat Erosion Through Afforestation

Tree planting and bioengineering works have been performed in the area of 15 ha in Mets Mantash community, Shirak Region. The works have been implemented in the frames of the Integrated Erosion Control project, which is co-financed by the Austrian Development Agency (ADA) and is one of the components of GIZ Integrated Biodiversity Management, South Caucasus programme.

'if the problem of erosion is not solved over time, it can have disastrous consequences on the agriculture of the communities: now are taking one of the anti-erosion measures in the area – afforestation. We are planting different tree species on the area of 15 ha such as oak and pine trees, as well as fruit trees such as wild pear and apple trees,' GIZ Integrated Biodiversity Management, South Caucasus programme Advisor Carsten Schulz said in his interview with EcoLur.

Armenia National Programme Officer at Austrian Development Agency Nora Alanakyan outlined, 'This program is one of the unique programs, where community development and nature protection are combined. Today almost all challenges in the program have been overcome and a total area of 155 ha will be planted with trees by the end of the year.'
Afforestation works will also be carried out in Saralanj, Poqr Mantash, Nahapetavan and Haritch communities in Shirak Region with around 65 ha of the area for the purpose of erosion prevention.

Afforestation works shall be carried out in the are of 155 ha in Shirak and Aragatsotn Regions.
