A 5 million euro project to restore Sevan ecosystem has been submitted to the European Union, as Deputy Environment Minister Irina Ghaplanyan said at the press conference held on June 2.
“The first is to set up a biological wastewater treatment plant in at least one large coastal community, the second is to clean the riverbeds, and the third is the recultivation of the abandoned Sotq mine.”
We are currently in the process of discussing with EU and the implementing organizations - GIZ and UN Development Program in Armenia. Most likely, the work within the framework of that program will start in September," Irina Ghaplanyan said. She noted that the ministry will continue to cooperate with the Helmholtz-Centre for Environmental Research located in Magdeburg, Germany.
"This year, a new grant of € 500,000 has been approved by the German Ministry of Education and Science to work with our Ministry's monitoring center and the National Academy of Sciences to conduct ongoing research to understand the problems and solutions to the Sevan ecosystem," Irina Ghaplanyan said.
