“EcoLur” Informational NGO has sent en enquiry to Samvel Khachatryan, General Director of “Akhtala Ore Processing Combine” CJSC, which says,
“Under “Armenia: Strategic Mineral Sector Sustainability Assessment” report published with the support of the World Bank, Nahatak tailing dump was considered to be one of the riskiest tailing dumps in Armenia. The locals continuously beat alarm signal on the leaks from the tailing dump.
In line with Article 6 of RA Law “On Information Freedom” and Article 4 of the Aarhus Convention, we would like to ask to provide us with the following information:
1. How would you comments on the appraisal on Nahatak tailing dump given in the “Armenia: Strategic Mineral Sector Sustainability Assessment” report? (Sending the report attached to the enquiry)
2. When does “Akhtala Ore Processing Combine” CJSC plan to stop the operation of Nahatak tailing dump and which methods will be applied for its reclaiming, how much the reclaiming of the tailing dump will cost and at what kind of funds the company will carry it out?
3. The reclaiming of Nazik Tailing Dump owned by Akhtala Ore Processing Combine” CJSC is considered to be incomplete by the specialists, as the tails have come out to the surface under the thin layers of the soil and together with the rainwater they flow to the Akhtala River and pollute the environment. Whether the company intends to take any measures towards proper reclaiming of Nazik tailing dump?
4. Please, provide us with the operation and environmental management plans of Akhtala Ore Processing Combine and Shamlukh copper mine.
5. Please, provide us with the safety passports of Nahatak and Nazik Tailing Dumps and technical instructions of the operation of Nahatak tailing dump.
6. Whether the company carried out social programs in the impacted communities – Akhtala, Shamlugh, Tchotchkan, Mets Ayrum, if yes, please, describe these projects.”
