On August 18, about 200 residents of Geghamasar enlarged community in Gegharkunik Region, Armenia, closed Vardenis-Artsakh highway in the morning complaining about the impact of Sotk gold mining carried out by GeoProMining Gold LLC. "Our main demand from the company is to observe the norms so that the water stays clean, to develop such a method so that there is no explosion and the air is not polluted," Sotq resident Sevak Khachatryan said in his telephone conversation with EcoLur.
"We take irrigation water from Sotq River, and drinking water comes from springs flowing from the mountains. Both these springs and Sotq River are very close to the mine. According to him, an agreement has been reached with the representatives of "GeoProMining Gold" LLC to organize a meeting with the participation of the residents, to discuss in order to find solutions to the problems. Currently, Vardenis-Artsakh highway is open.
