In order to protect human health and the environment from man-made emissions and emissions of mercury compounds, Environment Ministry has developed a draft law on Mercury and a draft amendment to RA Subsoil Code, which the National Assembly adopted in its first reading.
The draft law on mercury will ban the production of products with mercury additives. The Subsoil Code also prohibits the exploration and extraction of mercury as a mineral, except where mercury is not the main extracted mineral.
In fact, by allowing the soil management of mercury-containing mines, this legislative initiative could not protect human health and the environment from mercury emissions.
Reminder: mercury is a very dangerous chemical. It has a toxic effect on the nervous, digestive and immune systems, lungs, kidneys, skin and eyes.
