The second public discussion of the application for preliminary assessment of the environmental impact of geological works at polymetallic mining site of Vardenis, Vayots Dzor Region filed by "Mendia Resources" LLC will take place at Culture House in Vardahovit village, Yeghegis community, Vayots Dzor Region at 11:00 a.m, October 14, 2022.
RA Vayots Dzor Regional Municipality has issued a negative opinion regarding this application.
The opinion says:
"Dear Mr. Avetisyan, the information provided by you that Vardenis polymetallic mining site does not coincide with the area of "Ecological Corridor" (the distance is 16-17 km) was discussed with the relevant specialists of the Armenian branch of WWF.
This project contradicts the requirements of Article 26 (3) of the RA Land Code: "The use of individual subsoil sites is prohibited if there are plants or animal habitats are red-listed in Armenia on the plot located on the requested soil management site, as well as if animal migration routes pass through the given area."
The area is located at an altitude of 2200-3300m above sea level, from where about 35% of the demand for irrigation and drinking water of the region is provided.
The catchment area of Vayots Dzor Region is located in the area adjacent to the planned site, the area of which makes up 731 ha.
The water accumulated from the spring snowmelt (5.7-6.0 million m3 of water) and heavy rains will flow through Arpa-Sevan tunnel to Lake Sevan, as well as it will irrigate 8900-9000 ha of agricultural lands in Areni community (Hermon-Yelpin water line).
This activity contradicts the requirements of RA Water Code: "Consideration of the economic value of water in the processes of use, distribution and conservation of water resources.
Based on the above, we are issuing a negative position."
