According to the official figures, Nazik Tailing Dump belonging to “Akhtala Ore processing Combine” occupies a territory of 2 hectares. As a matter of fact, this figure is much higher, as the tails have spread out of the tailing dump borders, they flow together with rain water to the settlements located in the lower part of the tailing and get into the Akhtala River. As Artak Demirtchyan, Lori Regional Municipality Environmental Department Head, said in his interview with “EcoLur”, the Municipality has proposed “Akhtala Ore Processing Combine” several times to recultivate the tailing dump. “We have offered such a method for recultivation, which supposes not only to compensate expenses made by the company, but also to have a forest of industrial significance in 15 years for felling and planting a new one. This means that the company will compensate the expenses it makes in the form of timber,” Artak Demirtchyan said.
