Statement by Alliance of public ecological organizations

On 28 April 2011, the Armenian Government adopted decision 627-N “On Recognizing Eminent Domain of Public Land Areas in Qajaran, Artsvanik, Achanan, Sevqar and Chapni Villages, Syunik Region, and amendments in the designation of these land areas.” 27 ha of agricultural land areas was given to Zangezour Copper and Molybdenum Combine. The government decision contains no substantiation, besides general phrases about the need to expand ore mining, increase in export of raw materials, ZCMC strengthening. Qajaran villagers have applied to the government demanding to recognize this decision null and void.

We join to Qajaran villagers and think that the loss of village for Armenia means loss of people who protect not only their houses, but also our borders. If they are displaced, the mine and its owners will find themselves on the border in lieu of the village - “Cronimet Mining”,“Pure Iron” LLC, “Armenian Molybdenum Production” CJSC, “Zangezour Mining” LLC, “Zangezour Copper and Molybdenum Combine”. Let’s ask them whether they are ready to shed their blood for the land and willing to protect our borders as villagers?

We appeal to these companies to leave the village to Qajaran villagers. While in token of environmental responsibility which are stated in their official websites, we call on them to direct their profits to improving people’s health and environment and to assisting in Qajaran villagers to have healthy food on their tables not polluted with heavy metals, toxic elements, and not to have arsenic and mercury found in children’s hair.
