A document on the construction of a new nuclear power unit in Armenia will be signed within three months. It will be signed with Rosatom State Corporation. "A working group is being formed. We had preliminary consultations. We will work in an intensified mode. Documents on it will be signed within three months. We are working on a draft document. A document of comprehensive cooperation for the coming years is being prepared, in which the construction of a new nuclear unit will be mentioned," said RA Deputy Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure Hakob Vardanyan in his interview with Armenuhi Melkonyan, a journalist at "Hayastani Hanrapetutyun" daily.
He noted that technical and financial solutions are being discussed in the negotiations.
"We will agree to install the block that is tested, safe, there are all the conclusions available in this regard. I cannot honestly answer whether we will put a modular block or one powerful block. A lot of engineering work has to be done in order to be able to answer that question etc. has a number of advantages…If we had the opportunity to have a powerful, say, 1200 MW unit today, I would be in favor of it, because it is tested, installed in many countries of the world, it is the cheapest in terms of capital costs, etc, it has a number of advantages. On the contrary, the smaller, the more expensive, the more service problems are available.
But this does not mean that the traditional is right, the other is wrong or vice versa. Of course, we have experience in exploiting traditional atomic units. And it would be better for us to have one block so that we can apply our experience and not try something new.”
Reminder: the modernization works of the second power unit of the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant have already been completed. It will be operational until 2026. It is not ruled out that the operation will be extended until 2036. The construction of the new power unit is planned to start in 2026-2027, which will take 8-10 years.
It should be noted that billionaire Roman Trotsenko is considering investing in the construction of a new nuclear power plant. Roman Trotsenko is a major shareholder in gold and copper-molybdenum mining companies operating in Armenia.
