Not Excluded Electricity Tariffs To Increase Again In Coming Years Due To ANPP Loans

As a result of the modernization of the second power unit of the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant, the cost of nuclear fuel used at the ANPP decreased by 2.3 billion AMD. However, the cost of repaying and servicing the principal amount of the soft loan received with the guarantee of RA Government for the modernization of the ANPP increased by 15.23 billion AMD (excluding VAT), as we learn on the website of Public Services Regulatory Commission.

This credit obligation is one of the factors due to which, the electricity tariff in Armenia will increase by 4.7 AMD/kWh from February 1, 2022.

Reminder: the Armenian government had taken a loan from the Russian Federation in the amount of 270 million USD, a grant of 30 million USD, out of which, it had spent 189 million USD for the modernization of the 2nd power unit of the ANPP as of 2020.

According to "Strategic Plan for the Development of the Energy Sector of the Republic of Armenia (until 2040)", RA Government intends to operate the second power unit of the ANPP until 2036, if the extension of its safe operation is justified. Currently, the term of operation of the second power unit of the ANPP has been extended from 2016 to 2026. It is estimated that an additional $ 150 million will be required to extend the life of the ANPP Unit 2 until 2036.

From this, it can be assumed that in the near future it is possible to repay the loans taken for the modernization of ANPP second power unit, as well as the loans provided for the new nuclear power unit. According to "Strategic Program for the Development of the Energy Sector of the Republic of Armenia (until 2040)", RA Government has set a deadline of 2035 for the construction of a new power unit at the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant.
