Opportunity of Constructing New Nuclear Power Plants in Two Regions in Armenia Being Considered

Armenia is considering the possibility of building new nuclear power plants in two regions of the country with Russian projects. One plant is planned to be built on the platform of the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant in Armavir, the other in Syunik, which will have a small capacity. "The issue of small stations has been considered. There is a possibility to build such a station for “GeoProMining-Armenia” complex in Zangezur (Syunik Region)," Eduard Martirosyan, Director of Armenian Nuclear Power Plant CJSC, said in an interview with the Russian TASS news agency in Dubai.

Reminder: "GeoProMining" company has acquired 60% of shares of "Zangezur Copper and Molybdenum Combine" CJSC, which operates the largest Qajaran copper-molybdenum mine in Armenia. The company donated 15% of its shares to the Armenian government.

Regarding the construction of a new nuclear power plant on the platform of the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant in Armavir, Eduard Martirosyan said that the capacity of the new plant should be at least 500-600 MW. However, it is possible that the issue of building a more powerful station will arise with two units with a total capacity of 1200 MW. It will depend on the level of energy consumption then increased and the possibility of expanding electricity supply to neighboring countries.

The modernization of the second power unit of the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant has already been completed. It will be operational until 2026. It is not ruled out that the operation will be extended until 2036. The construction of a new power unit on the platform of the nuclear power plant is planned to start in 2026-2027, which will take 8-10 years. According to Eduard Martirosyan, specialists in this field will be trained in Russia.

Reminder: during the "Expo 2020" world exhibition in Dubai on January 20, "Rosatom" state corporation and "Armenian Nuclear Power Plant" CJSC signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in the construction of new nuclear power units with Russian projects in Armenia.
