Armenia Considering Possibility of Constructing Nuclear Power Stations of Small Capacity

Will Armenia abandon its intention to build a new 1200 MW nuclear power plant, replacing it with smaller capacity nuclear power plants? RA Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan addressed the issue on May 24, 2023, during a Q&A session with the government in the National Assembly.

“Now we are very actively negotiating with several partners to build a new nuclear power plant. These negotiations are conducted with the Russian Federation, the USA, as well as with third countries,” Nikol Pashinyan noted.

According to the Prime Minister, a delegation from Armenia will leave for the USA to learn more about the possibilities of modular nuclear power plants in the near future.

According to Nikol Pashinyan, there were also other proposals, but somewhat problematic. "They are offering a 1000 MW nuclear power plant at once. Our experts say that there are still questions regarding the placement of 1000 MW in our energy system. Of course, there are questions related to modular. And we should consider what is more economically beneficial for us," the Prime Minister noted.
