"We are discussing what type of nuclear power plant should be built in Armenia, and there is information that both you and the people should know," Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced at the session of the Armenian government held on February 8.
"That information is as follows: in the case of modular technologies, when an accident occurs in a nuclear reactor, it is considered a local incident. When an accident occurs at the modular nuclear power plant, the population of the nearby settlement is not evacuated, because the accident does not pose a danger to the surrounding population," Nikol Pashinyan noted.
Khachatur Khachikyan, First Deputy Chair of Nuclear Safety Regulation Committee, noted: "We received the information during the meeting with the design organizations, but it is necessary that they allow us to see the calculation data in order to observe the real data. They are kept under a fairly tight veil, and in order to be able to access them, there are certain agreements that must be signed."
Nikol Pashinyan responded: "This issue was discussed in the Security Council and a decision was reached that we should go the way of signing those necessary agreements. We are studying all possible options, which one is the most relevant to the interests of Armenia. At this moment, we cannot reach a final decision, because the discussions still have to continue."
