After a ten-month-long lull the monopolist of the uranium program in Armenia, “Armenian -Russian Mining Organization” as represented by “Abvan” Company again appeared in the horizon of Lernadzor Village, Syunik Region. It declared it intends to close down the old wells and to open new ones for uranium prospecting. “We were told that there is no uranium, most probably, and prospecting program should be finished, and new wells will be dug in accordance with the plan,” said a Lernadzor resident to EcoLur. Still last year the head of Abvan said the works would, most probably, be not continued and that the company incurred large losses. At the same time, the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Armen Movsisyan declared at the closing conference for 2010 that uranium in Lernadzor hadn’t been detected.
“Armenian -Russian Mining Organization” has a license issued for uranium prospecting till 2014. In our opinion, Lernadzor villagers and neighboring territories have to face uranium games many times and to hear many times, there is no uranium, while wells are dug and money is spent just for fun.
