The Water Committee, responding to the alarm signals on Lake Arpi at a very low level, informs that Lake Arpi levels have been reduced to the dead volume not for the drainage but for the study of other technical units.
The Water Committee statement says: “The total volume of Lake Arpi Reservoir is 105 million cubic meters, and the dead volume is 5 million cubic meters.
During the 70 years of operation of the reservoir, a number of technical issues have arisen, which are related to the wear individual elements of the reservoir, stability, and change in the characteristics.
On the basis of a partial study, the World Bank's Experts Group on Dam Safety, as well as specialists from the German Development Bank (KfW), concluded that the dam site should be rehabilitated and upgraded to comply with regulatory requirements.
The Water Committee had announced a tender for the design of these works, and the contractor designing organization had been decided om.
In order to create conditions for the design works, the water in the Lake Arpi reservoir was lowered to the horizon of 5 million cubic meters.
That horizon will be maintained until November 20, after which the accumulation of water will resume."
