During his visit to Lori Region Nature Protection Minister Aramayis Grigoryan visited the area of Tchotchkan tailing dump owned by 'Akhtala ODC' and detected a number of violations and drawbacks. The Minister outlined a number of drawbacks causing environmental problems and stressed out that all the violations will be strictly punished.
Aramayis Grigoryan mentioned he will follow the regulation and corrdination of problems and he expects the company to submit to the Ministry a proper project for tailing dump closure and reclaiming.
Tchotchkan Tailing Dump was put into operation in 1965. In 1988-1989 the Soviet authorities wanted to reclaim the tailing dump, as it was full, but it remained open and without nay care because of the collapse of the Soviet Union. Recently 'Akhtala ODC' started operating the tailing dumps, but the water circulaton system of the tailing dump doesn't operate for several years, as a result, the toxic industrial tails from the tailing dump are periodically dumped into the Debed River.
