Nature Protection Ministry Explanation on Lake Sevan Level

The Nature Protection Ministry clarified why the level of Lake Sevan had decreased. The clarification says “In reply to the concerns in the press on the decrease in Lake Sevan level (from 1 September to 19 October), Water Resources Management Agency of Nature Protection Ministry informs that as of 1 September 2015 the level of Lake Sevan accounted for 1900.34 meters (as compared with 1900.29 meters as of 1 September 2014). The water outlet from Lake Sevan for irrigation purposes continued till 12 September 2015. As of today, the level of Lake Sevan has accounted for 1900.30 meters according to the data provided by Hydromet Service of MES RA. On 18 September 2015 the group created from stakeholder departments sealed the left and right elevating mechanisms of “Sevan” HPP water intake, after which water outlet for irrigation purposes from Lake Sevan hasn’t been carried out.

The decrease in Lake Sevan level by another 6 cm is condition with the decrease in temperatue and evaporation of lake surface. As of 21 October 2015, the level of Lake Sevan made up 1900.24 meters, which is as much as 7 centimeters as compared with 21 October 2014 (1900.17 meters).”
