SHPPs To Endanger Environmental Balance of Syunik Water Basin?

The SHPP recently constructed and to be constructed in Syunik Region can pose danger for the environmental balance of the water basin in Syunik Region, as Socio-Economic Development Program of Syunik Region for 2014-2017 says, “The main positive side of small hydropower is the reduction of harmful substances and greenhouse gases, the use of local energy sources, but SHPPs also have their negative sides. The business relating to SHPPs have a tendency to expand. Taking into consideration this fact, it’s necessary
1)      To temporarily stop issuing licenses for SHPP construction until thorough legal regulation of this issue,
2)      To conduct public monitoring of SHHPs with the participation of state inspection bodies,
3)      To review energy policy relating to SHPPs,” the project says.

According to the license provided by the Public Service Regulatory Committee, 41 SHPPs are developed in Syunik Region.
