Bardukh Gabrielyan: Again Discussions in Progress on Increasing Water Intake from Lake Sevan

The increase in Lake Sevan water intake becomes a standard: this year again there are discussions in progress that reservoirs are not full and there will be a water deficit, as Director of Scientific Center for Zoology and Hydroecology Bardukh Gabrielyan said at the annual general meeting of Department for Natural Sciences of NAS RA and added this year water intake of Lake Sevan is expected to be added, whereas the increase in water intake last year has led to the decrease in the lake level by 3-4 cm.

He outlined that the main factors of wide-scale blooming of Lake Sevan last year were temperature background and biogenic elements.

“These green-blue algae are considered to be toxic and contain intoxication risks and generate allergic reactions with animals and humans, even intoxications. If we don’t have an increase in lake level this year, we will again heave water blooming in the summer season, which affects bioresources both on the number of fish and crawfish,” he mentioned. Under Gabrielyan, their Center submits different proposals to the Armenian Government each year.

“Our proposals are not always accepted, though both our Institute and NAS are the official advisers of the government,” he mentioned.

Under Bardukh Gabrielyan, works shall be carried out in three directions: increase in the lake water level, reduction of nutrients in the drainage basin and preservation of the relevant amount of the crawfish and industrial fish reserves: supervision over bioresources shall be set not only in the course of spawning months but also pre-spawning months.
