The executive has increased the amount of industrial whitefish fishing from Lake Sevan by 50 tons, as well as extended the fishing deadline to October 15, 2021. The decision was reached at the sitting of RA Government held on September 2.
It should be noted that the deadline for industrial whitefish hunting in Lake Sevan, which started on May 14, 2021, was set for September 1. During that time, 250 tons of whitefish had to be caught: 303 contracts were signed with Environment Ministry to catch about 221 tons and 164 kg of fish. According to the substantiation of the resolution, no application was submitted for about 29 tons of whitefish out of the established quantity. As of August 31, 2021, there are about 20 tons of bids, which the contracted fishermen did not manage to catch until September 1 due to weather conditions.
The resolution to set a new hunting date and increase the volume is based on the issue of settling the social problem in Gegharkunik Region and the dissatisfaction voiced by fishermen. It is mentioned in the substantiation that the proposal was discussed and an agreement was reached with the scientists of the Scientific Center of Zoology and Hydroecology of NAS RA. In particular, the center said that they do not object to this proposal if the Ministry of Environment imposes strict control over the fishing process.
However, how Environment Ministry will carry out this strict control is not known, given the large number of cases of illegal hunting. Prior to the adoption of the draft, the Ministry was obliged to provide guarantees that it had the necessary mechanisms, skills and resources to carry out this control. On the other hand, it is a problem that the real number of fish catches is unknown, given the volume of illegal fishing.
It should be reminded that according to the data provided to EcoLur by the Center for Zoology and Hydroecology of NAS RA, if in 2013-2018 the total biomass of fish increased year by year, from 1296 tons to 2948 tons, then decreased in 2018 to 2668 tons, and 2345 tons in 2020. In the same way, the industrial stock of sausage decreased to 667 tons in 2019 and 586 tons in 2020, respectively. The Center for Zoology and Hydroecology of NAS RA carried out the annual assessment of fish and crayfish stocks within the framework of a contract signed with the Ministry of Environment.
Declining fish stocks in Lake Sevan, in their turn, worsen the ecological condition of the lake, given that fish are the assimilators of organic matter in the lake. Due to the inflow of wastewater, the decrease of the level, the insufficient fish stock, the concentration of organic matter in the lake increases. In this situation, the high temperature contributes to the activation of the swamping processes of Lake Sevan.
It should be reminded that this year the executive decided to draw up to 245 million cubic meters of water from Lake Sevan. 195.129 million cubic meters of water have already been released out of the lake. As of September 2, the level of the lake is 1900.61 m, which is 7 cm lower than the same day last year.
