The spring floods of 2024 in the republic started from the third ten days of March 2024, heavy rainfall and floods were recorded, which were accompanied by an emergency.
The situation was presented by Levon Azizyan, Director of "Hydrometeorology and Monitoring Center" of RA Environment Ministry at "Armenpress" Press Club.
"On the night of May 25-26, intensive rainfall was observed in Lori and Tavush Regions. During one night, 40-60 percent of monthly rainfall was recorded. Due to continuously observed intense rainfall, sharp rises in the water level were observed in the basins of the Debed and Aghstev rivers. The observed water output for most of those observation points was the highest value in the last 65 years and the second in the entire history of observations," Levon Azizyan noted.
He presented the situation in the basin of Lake Sevan. On January 1, 2024, the level of Lake Sevan made up 1900.17 m. The level of the lake started to rise from May 14. As of June 4, it makes up 1900.58 m, which is 10 cm higher than the level of the same day last year.
"In May, the level of Lake Sevan rose by 21 cm, which is the highest index in the last 8 years," Levon Azizyan outlined.
The total volume of water in 5 reservoirs of the republic is 683 million cubic meters, which is 302 million cubic meters higher than the index of the same day in 2023.
Levon Azizyan noted that the predictions were almost 100 percent substantiated. Only the predictions of the maximum flow rates in the basins of the Debed and Aghstev rivers were not justified.
