''We are changing our geography with our activities,' said Gagik Sukhudyan who held the office of Director of Sevan National Park from 1981-1992, and is concerned with the mining industry developed around Lake Sevan, eliminates the landscape which preserves the lake. 'The mountains protected the mountains as shields from natural and artificial pollutions, and their may originate from this such as Aregouni mountain shield, Sevan mountain shield, Vardenis mountain shield, Geghama mountain shield. The territory of Sevan basin is 4850 square kilometers, which is completely protected with these shields, and maybe that's why Sevan has such pure water. Currently Vardenis mountain shield is destroyed as a result of Sotq mine and its incredible growth rates thus making the lake vulnerable from that side. The same is true about other mines (note: at present 24 licences have been issued for mine development around Lake Sevan). You can have a look at the mountains and see they are not that mountains we were used to, just wastes left after explosions. They can never protect Sevan. Today we can't use any data that date back to the past. We need new maps,' Gagik Sukhudyan thinks.
