Metal waste processing plant՝ at a distance of 680 m from the medical center "Erebuni"

It is planned to build a metal waste processing plant in Erebuni administrative district in Yerevan. "Leyla Khachatryan" LLC has submitted to Environment Ministry the application for the Preliminary Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of the planned metal waste processing plant in the industrial zone of Erebuni administrative district at 22/1 Arin Berd. The second public hearing on the EIA application will take place on June 21 at 11:00 am at the residence of Head of Erebuni administrative district. The first discussion took place on April 5.

Under the EIA application, the distance of the plant from the nearest residential areas is about 810 m, 680 m from the nearest building of Erebuni Medical Center. The company will operate in a leased industrial building. Copper, aluminum, brass and bronze wastes will be used as raw materials, which will be bought from the population and organizations.

The main risks of the planned activity, under the project, are related to the interaction with the waste used and the effect of the thermal regime of the furnaces. "Smoke gases are generated during the operation of furnaces, which contain hazardous substances, in particular, nitrogen and carbon oxides and solid particles," the project says. However, exact emission estimates are not provided; they will be included in the EIA report.

Metal waste will be recycled by casting. The expected casting capacities will be 700 t/year for copper waste and 1180 t/year for aluminium waste. The stoves will be equipped with a circulating cooling system, a ventilator and a saliva filter. The furnaces will be cooled by circulating water. Water supply will be provided from the city water pipeline.
