The blooming of Lake Sevan and the appearance of a large amount of algae in it is due to many environmental problems, first of all, artificial fluctuations of the lake level, lack of cleaning equipment, uncontrolled tourism and the presence of many scattered sources of pollution.
The joint studies of the Scientific Center of Zoology and Hydroecology of NAS RA with Yerevan State University have shown that that during 2020-2021 the presence of Dolichospermum/Anabaena flos-aquae species of algae primarily contributed to the emergence of bloomingin the coastal part of Lake Sevan during the summer, which produces a potential the toxic compound anatoxin-a, the amount of which in water reached 0.147 μg/l in 2019.
During the blooming period in July 2020, the quantity and biomass of this type of algae amounted to 1980000-86000000 cl/l and 11.88-516 g/m³.
The scientists propose new approaches for the management of water purification and swamping processes in Sevan Lake ecosystem, preventing the overgrowth and flowering of cyanobacteria. Thus, the use of natural adsorbents for improving water parameters is considered an effective, affordable and economical method in the field of modern lake sciences.
