The head of “Environmentalists’ House” civic initiative, Gor Hovhannisyan, shared a video on Facebook reporting large-scale tree cutting in the territory of Dilijan National Park and Dilijan community area.
The video was posted on March 21, International Day of Forests. “A part of this terrible-scale destruction is located within Dilijan National Park, while the other part is in community areas. All the trees are located next to each other. It is not easy to cut that many trees—they entered the area and calmly carried out the work. There are employees there who are paid to protect all this, while the other part is in the community area and should also be protected. It must have taken months to cut and transport all that wood—has no one come to check for months? The village of Haghartsin is located below. Water sources originate from this forest, flow downward, and people rely on them. The whole village will suffer as a result. One person made money, while everyone else has suffered,” Gor Hovhannisyan noted.
Naira Aghababyan, Head of Information and Public Relations Department of the RA Environmental Protection and Mining Inspectorate Body, informed EcoLur that administrative proceedings have been initiated regarding the case. Additional information will be provided upon completion of the process.
In response to the alert, RA Prosecutor General’s Office, via its official Facebook page, stated under the video:
“The Prosecutor’s Office is addressing the issue raised. Thank you for your concern and for not remaining indifferent.”
To obtain official information regarding the case, EcoLur has also applied to the Ministry of Environment and is awaiting a response.
