What Has the Government Done to Solve Problem with Water in Ararat Valley?

Whatever is going on in the artesian valley of Ararat is a crime: this is how Pan-Armenian Environmental Front member Levon Galstyan qualified the exhaustion of underground water resources in Ararat Valley at the discussion of EcoLur’s “Biblical Disaster”. He reminded the proposals made within the studies conducted by Clean Energy and Water Program (CEWP),  the donor is the US Agency for International Development (USAID). It clearly says, if the water management in Ararat Valley continues being used in this manner not adhering to the approved safe yield of 34.7 m3/sec, in the upcoming 1-2 years we will have face to:

 - Decrease in groundwater level and capacity  5-10% from the central part of the basin towards the north-west,

 - shrinking of the artesian zone, the reduction of positive hydrostatic pressure will actually eliminate the flow of the Sevjur-Aknalitch group of springs.

In 2014 this report was presented, but so far the government hasn’t taken any measures. The water outlet for fish farms continues, but it clearly says – 12 cubic meters/sec for fishing purposes. Small fish farms are closed, while fish giants “Unifish”, “Alex Grig” and others have dug huge holes and still continue operating.

Mher Mkrtumyan, Head of the State Committee on Water Industry of Territorial Administration Ministry, said, “To tell the truth, Nature Protection Ministry will give more clear answers to your questions, as it’s beyond the competences of the Water Industry, but as far as I know, certain actions have already been taken – imposing valve regime, setting automatic water meters, conservations etc.”
