930 new waste bins will be installed in Yerevan for sorting plastic, paper, glass and aluminum. The waste bins were provided to the capital within the framework of "Cooperation of Yerevan, Warsaw, Tirana Capitals on Common Challenges of Hazardous Waste Management" funded by the European Union.
In addition to the waste bins, two crane-loader trucks were also provided for the collection and transportation of glass waste bins. Within the framework of the project, it is expected to increase waste collection addresses from 135 to 300, waste bins from 300 to 1200.
On February 2, 2024, a seminar-discussion dedicated to the expansion of the Project was held, during which the main challenges and initiatives of municipal waste management were presented, and experts in the field shared best practices.
Frank Hess, Head of Cooperation Department of EU delegation in Armenia, noted that the Program is aimed not only at waste sorting and processing, but also at reducing the amount of garbage going to landfills.
Armen Begoyan, Director of Yerevan Municipality "Greening and Environmental Protection", referred to the works of the Project in previous years and their outcomes. "We launched the program in 2019-2020. During these years, as a result of the implementation of the project, 30 tons of plastic and 30 tons of glass, about 600 tons of paper went to nature less every year. The existing 130 addresses of garbage cans did not provide access to the entire population of Yerevan. By receiving another 900 waste bins, we will have the opportunity to ensure availability," he noted.
According to Armen Begoyan, the installation of waste bins will start in the spring. In their forecasts, as a result of the increase in the number of waste bins, 50 tons of plastic, 50-60 tons of glass and 1000 tons of paper will not go to nature every year. "The organization earned about 50 million AMD annually by collecting waste and handing it over to businessmen. According to calculations, next we will be able to increase that number to 100 million AMD," he emphasized.
Armen Shekoyan, Head of Waste Sorting Department of "Greening and Environmental Protection" NAOC, responded to EcoLur's question about whether there are organizations that recycle aluminum waste in Armenia. "We have offers that are ready to recycle aluminum. We will hand them over by auction, they will reskin them."
