In 2024, the municipal solid domestic waste management program will be launched, within the framework of which it is planned to build a new landfill in the area adjacent to the existing Nubarashen landfill site, as well as close the existing Nubarashen and Ajapnyak landfills, as Yerevan’s development plan for 2024 says.
According to the document, 290-320 thousand tons of household waste is transferred to Nubarashen landfill site with an area of 52 hectares, which was launched in the 1950s. The landfill was not originally designed and built to any accepted standards.
It should be noted that the construction of a new landfill site in Yerevan has been on the agenda since 2017. EUR 26 million is available for the construction of a new landfill adjacent to the Nubarashen landfill site. Loans of EUR 8 million each from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the European Investment Bank, a grant of EUR 8 million from the European Union and a grant of EUR 2 million from the Environment Partnership Fund. However, the plan was not implemented during these years. Another 5 million euros are needed.
