RA Government is going to ensure the complete treatment of the wastewater discharged from the three existing wastewater treatment plants in the Lake Sevan basin within the next 5 years. The executive is going to combine this process with the complete sewerage of the settlements around Lake Sevan, with the creation of appropriate conditions for the installation of local wastewater treatment plants and equipment by the economic entities operating in the area, as the program of for RA Government 2021-2026 says.
Gavar, Martuni and Vardenis Towns adjacent to Lake Sevan have sewage treatment plants from the communities, but these cities are not completely supplied with sewerage. It should be reminded that according to "Khimmaster" LLC, which is engaged in the production of domestic and industrial wastewater treatment plants, the level of sewerage in Gavar in 2018 was 36%, Martuni - 47%, Vardenis - 41%. Sewage flows into the lake through rivers, polluting it. In the treatment plants, the water is not subjected to biological treatment, disinfection, only after mechanical treatment, it is discharged into the lake.
According to “Part 1 – Description: Development of Draft River Basin Management Plan For Sevan River Basin District In Armenia” published within the framework of European Union’s Water Initiative Plus (EUWI+) document, not all communities in Sevan Basin have a sewerage system. The total length of the network is 50.4 km, and the total volume of domestic wastewater in the sewerage networks is 4.2 million m3/ ear. Based on population statistics, the total volume of wastewater discharge in Gavaraget, Martuni and Masrik Rivers is 2672.1 m3/day.
