In order to prevent the pollution of Lake Sevan with sewage, about 2400 recreational and food facilities located on the shores of Lake Sevan, out of which 300 are permanent ones, must build and operate sewage, domestic sewage treatment plants at their own expense.
Modern local treatment plants should be installed in the rural littoral communities of the lake. These measures should be implemented in 2022 and the upcoming years: this is what is stated in the annual program of measures for the restoration, preservation, reproduction, normal development and use of the Lake Sevan ecosystem for 2022. However, the plan does not specify how many treatment plants will be commissioned in 2022.
Among the measures to be taken are the development of design and estimate documents for the construction of biological treatment plants, sludge treatment plants in Gavar, Martuni and Vardenis wastewater treatment plants, and the design of wastewater treatment plants at the expense of funds not prohibited by the law of the Republic of Armenia.
It should be noted that this event, as well as the installation of treatment plants in littoral resorts and food establishments, were also included in the 2021 annual program of measures for the restoration, preservation, reproduction, normal development and use of Lake Sevan ecosystem.
Reminder: RA government, in its plan for 2021-2026, states that it intends to ensure the complete treatment of wastewater discharged from the three existing wastewater treatment plants in Lake Sevan basin within the next 5 years and combine this process with the complete sewerage of the settlements around Lake Sevan, with the creation of appropriate conditions for the installation of local wastewater treatment plants and equipment by the business entities operating in the area.
