Celebrating World Water Day on 22 March

On March 22, the world celebrates World Water Day.

World Water Day, established by the United Nations in 1993, highlights the importance of fresh water.

According to official UN figures, 2.2 billion people currently have no access to safe water. Resources are needed to combat the global water crisis. This year, the UN has decided to focus on groundwater issues.

Most of the groundwater in Armenia is located in Ararat Valley. Here groundwater is anthropogenically affected. Due to the careless, unregulated, and illegal use of water resources in Ararat artesian basin, the normal balance of water resources restoration has been endangered in the last 10-15 years. There is a disproportion of water supply and demand. About 30 communities in Ararat and Armavir Regions are deprived of water, some areas are swamped, and about 4000 hectares of agricultural lands are rendered unusable or waterless.
