What Measures Planned for Lake Sevan Recovery for 2023?

The Government of the Republic of Armenia approved the annual plan for restoration, preservation, reproduction and use of the Lake Sevan ecosystem for 2023 at its session held on September 29, 2022. According to the rationale of the relevant resolution adopted by RA Government, over  20 measures have been identified.

In the annual plan of Lake Sevan for 2023, measures are divided into two areas: improvement of the management system and improvement of environmental and natural management functions of Lake Sevan catchment area.

Among them are measures aimed at reducing water discharges from Lake Sevan. In this way, it is planned to apply water-saving technologies in the regions, communities and communities adjacent to Sevan Lake in order to efficiently use water from Lake Sevan during the irrigation season, in particular to introduce drip irrigation networks. The maintenance, operation and maintenance of Vorotan-Arpa-Sevan hydro junction is also aimed at increasing the water in the lake, for which it is planned to allocate 205,800.0 thousand AMD.

In order to identify the reasons for the bloom of Lake Sevan, an assessment of the impact of net fish farming on the ecosystem of Lake Sevan will be carried out. In particular, 118,163.2 thousand AMD will be used to calculate the amount of biogenic elements (phosphorus, nitrogen) and evaluate their impact on the ecosystem of Lake Sevan.

According to the official document, in case of availability of adequate funding, it is planned to build sewage treatment plants for biological treatment in the mechanical sewage treatment plants operating in rural coastal communities in Gavar, Martuni and Vardenis.

In 2023, the establishment of 5 forest zones around Lake Sevan is planned, which should be implemented by the forces of "Sevan National Park".

One of the important components of Lake Sevan annual plan for 2023 is the use of alternative water resources as a result of the construction of new reservoirs in Argitchi and Astghadzor in Gegharkunik Region. There are no clear figures on the costs of building new reservoirs in the project annex, only the expense of funds not prohibited by RA law is indicated.
