On April 11, 2023, a round table on "Citizens' right to live in a clean and healthy environment - Gyumri" was held at Shirak branch of "Armenian Center for the Protection of Human Rights named after AD Sakharov" NGO in Gyumri. It was organized by "EcoLur" Informational NGO within the framework of "Be informed about plans and programs of Green cities in Yerevan and Gyumri" project.

In this publication, we present the response of “Gyumri Communal Service” CC and Green City project experts to "Gyumri Green City Action Plan and Its Implementation" report drafted by EcoLur NGO.

Problem of green spaces in Gyumri

Director Artavazd Voskanyan, Director of "Gyumri Communal Service", noted, "Leveling works were done in a part of the existing landfill site near Mush district, black soil was filled and 1300 trees were planted, we conducted an irrigation network, thanks to which we will have a forest layer. About 200 more trees will be planted in that area this year."

Gevorg Petrosyan, an expert of "Green City" project, President of "Biosofia" NGO, noted that it was necessary to develop a long-term strategy for Gyumri Town in order to achieve the targets set by the program.

Referring to the lack of green areas, Gevorg Petrosyan noted, "As a result of street construction, green areas were damaged and destroyed.

Water Problem

Project expert, Director of "Third Nature" NGO Rafael Mkhitaryan also mentioned, "The reason for the high pollution indicators of the Akhuryan River is the problem of the drainage system in Gyumri. During the Soviet Union, the right-bank tributary of the Gyumri river had a collector, while the left-bank tributary did not. Meanwhile, the construction of the left bank collector and the restoration of the treatment plant will solve the problem of river pollution by 80%."

Problem of Atmospheric Air

According to Gevorg Petrosyan, atmospheric air monitoring in Gyumri is carried out at one point, which is located in one of the greenest areas in the yard of the Seismic Protection Service.

Gevorg Petrosyan proposed to create a community council, which should lay down the clear targets of "Green City" project.
