As of 17 May 2016, the Azat reservoir is almost 100% full: the capacity of the reservoir is 70 million cum, and now it’s full by 68.4 million cum. The increase in the reservoir level was confirmed also by Azat reservoir fishermen, who noted last year the level was extremely low. The fishermen also expressed their concerns with the construction of Qaghtsrashen gravity irrigation system, as in this case Azat reservoir won’t be full, while its water is used to irrigate the land areas of the adjacent communities.

Garni Community Head Ashot Vardanyan said in his interview with EcoLur, in case Qaghtsrashen project is implemented, 12 communities in Ararat Region will take 300 l/s water. “If 300 liter is taken from here, the water let out of Azat reservoir will be reduced by 300 liters,” he said. Meanwhile Qaghtsrashen project doesn’t mention how much water will be taken for Ararat Region and what the impact will be on Azat reservoir.
