SHHPs or solar energy? Debate between ASUE Associate Professor Ghukas Mehrabyan and EBRD Sustainable Energy Financing Facility Project Manager Karen Arabyan on this topic.
“Solar energy doesn’t cause any damage to nature, but you know what is going on in the Republic of Armenia with hydro power plant: people are struggling, feeling trees, changing riverbeds, causing great damage to nature, while solar energy is harmless but not less powerful,” Ghukas Mehrabyan said.
Under him, having one square kilometer of territory to obtain solar energy is equal to the half of hydroresources in whole Armenia. In the specialist’s opinion solar energy is not costly.
“I am not interested in governmental attitude at all, I want one individual entrepreneur to get interested and to finance this project. Armenian won’t have any problems with hot water during 9 months,” Gh. Mehrabyan said.
Meanwhile Karen Arabyan thinks we don’t need any solar energy, as it’s rather costly. “It will cost 90 AMD as electricity. Are we willing to pay this price for clean electricity?” Karen Arabyan asked.
He prefers the construction of SHHPs, “SHHPs have many problems, but these problems can be solved, proposals are made, but for now we don’t have any alternative power source, maybe wind energy, but all the problems won’t be solved in this way,” Karen Arabyan said.
“Definitely SHHPs are the best and the most important version for Armenia as alternative energy. But the target is that SHHPs are constructed and operated in incorrect way,” Hydrologist Genadi Kojoyan said. Under him, SHHPs should be taken under control and constructed and operated in line with the project only.
