Armenia has only 7 cleaning stations in Yerevan, Gavar, Martuni, Vardenis, Jermuk, Dilijan and Paraqar. Except for the latter, all other cleaning stations clean swage only mechanically, i.e. they don’t let large garbage through bars.

Eduard Mesropyan, Director of “Jinj” LLC Consulting Company, expressed his concerns with the threats arising from poor management of sewage at the conference “Water - Ground for Sustainable Development” held on 22 March, World Water Day.

He particularly noted that the public system of the towns is not included in the general plans of development. It specifically refers to the site development of the central part of the town, where the overload of the sewage system creates high-level threats. “Because of high overload, the sewage water may get mixed with drinking water, which is extremely hazardous,” Mesropyan noted.

The antisanitary situation conditioned with the absence of mechanisms for management of sewage gets more complicated in tourist places and in different buildings located along the highways. As a rule, the sewage is dumped into the nearby river.

“If you have noticed, the paid rest zones in resort towns are located lower than luxurious hotels, which don’t have cleaning stations. You can notice that sewage is dumped into a well, which is then washed off to the nearby river. And the families having arrived for several hours and paid for “rest”, go to swim in the toilet draining,” he said.

The construction of water discharge system and cleaning structures needs significant funding. For this purpose, reforms in the legislative basis and encouraging mechanisms are required, the specialist think. According to the preliminary assessment, the supply of sewage system to all residential areas in Armenia will require around 2.6 billion Euros of investment funds.
