NEW ENVIRONMENTAL THREAT EMERGED IN ARMENIA- RADON GAS

A new environmental problem has emerged in Armenia connected with radioactive impact of radon gas. This statement was made by Armen Saghatelyan, Director of Center for Ecological Noosphere Studies of National Academy of Sciences of Armenia and Lilit Sahakyan, Laboratory Head at the same institute, on 11 February.
Radon is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of uranium. It is one of the densest substances that remains a gas under normal conditions and is considered to be a health hazard due to its radioactivity. It is 6-7 times as heavy as atmospheric air, that's why it accumulates in the basements and first grounds of buildings. As most children’s institutions (for example) kindergartens are located on the first ground, while the immune system of the children is still not strong enough, they are first affected by radon.
