On Facebook social network and EcoLur blog Jermuk Town activists submitted risks connected with Amoulsar mine development, which is located near the border of Vayots Dzor and Syunik Regions. Jermuk Town activists’statement says, “Despite the assurances made by “Geoteam” Company that mine examination and international laboratory expert assessment results show that the mine has no uranium reserves, nevertheless, specialists state that gold and uranium are interconnected elements (especially in our region), i.e. the presence of one element supposes the presence of the other. It’s if particular interest that still in the Soviet years the development of Azatek gold mine located in the surroundings of Vayq Town, 35 km far away from Jermuk, was accompanied with uranium mining, which resulted in drastic increase in radiation level in the region and drastic rise in number of people ill with cancer.” Kechout reservoir is located in the administrative territory of Jermuk Town from where the water of Arpa and Vorotan Rivers flow to Lake Sevan through Arpa-Sevan Tunnel. Rise in radiation level in water is a direct threat not only for our region, but also for the whole country jeopardizing the ecosystem of Lake Sevan. Amoulsar mine development issue should turn into a topic for special discussion by reviewing decisions formerly taken by different state authorities and specify the final position of the Armenian Government to the further implementation of this project.”
