International Day for Biological Diversity is celebrated on 22 May. EcoLur Press Club (Hanrapetutyan 49, in front of “Europe” Hotel) will host a press conference on biodiversity issues at 11:00 on 22 May. For the first time World Wildlife Fund Armenia Director Karen Manvelyan will publicize information about the red-listed species existing in the territory of Amulsar gold mine. “Center for Bird Lovers” NGO Chairman Silva Adamyan will present the disastrous state of the birds in Armash territory.
Armenia is one of the riches countries in the Caucasus on species biodiversity; meanwhile its losses in flora and fauna are essential. The number of Caucasian leopards has reduced within recent years; the number of bezoar goats is supported with great efforts. Birds are shot in the territories of fish farms. Subsoil is exploded in the habitats of red-listed animals, while the access of activists to the reserves is forbidden, where the poachers have quite free access. New Red Book of Armenia has increased number of species on the verge of extinction: 452 species of higher plants versus previous 387 and 153 species of vertebrates versus previous 99.
