Armenian PM Hovik Abrahamyan received Howard Stevenson, President and CEO of British Lydian International, and discussed the project the company operates - Amulsar open pit mining project using heap leaching technology for gold extraction. As the press release of the government says, “The Prime Minister underscored importance of carrying out such a big foreign investment project in Armenia that will contribute to the development and economic growth of mining industry.”
The press release doesn’t mention the source and extent of these significant investments and whether they discussed the question that the main investors of the company – International Finance Corporation, IFC, and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, EBRD, still didn’t make any decision on investing into the Amulsar project implementation.
The IFC and EBRD informed about not taking any further decision on financing Amulsar project to the protesting public and locals, who are exposed to the project impact. EBRD top managers also made a similar statement at the annual meeting on the bank held in Tbilisi on 15-16 May 2015.
