Gegharot Water Poisonous: Aragats Residents Need Environmentalists’ Help

“Besides two operating HPPs in Aragats Village, the third one is planned to be constructed. The villagers are in horror: they are ready to protest, but they need environmentalists’ help. The Gegharot river doesn’t have even grogs, but it used to have trout. Its water can’t be used even for irrigation or animals. As animal keepers say, even small amounts of water can kill animals,” www.a1plus.am website writes.

As of 1 January 2014, under the licenses issued by Public Services Regulatory Committee and the main indicators of small hydro power plants operated by hydropower companies, the following SHPPs are constructed on this river:

  1. “Aragats-1” SHPP operated by “VAKUFLO” LLC, derivation length – 2350 meters,
  2. “Gegharot” SHPP operated by “El-Kas” CJSC, derivation length – 4640  meters,

The SHPPs pipe a total river area of 6990 meters, which makes up 27.96% of the river.

Under EcoLur’s Ecological Risk Model, this indicator is critical for the river.

Besides, the Public Services Regulatory Committee has issued licenses for the construction of the following SHPPS – “Alpiakan1” SHPP – derivation length – 3300 meters, “Lusarpi” SHPP - derivation length – 1120meters. If these SHPPs are construction, the river will be piped by a total of 11410 meters, which will make up 45.64% of the river. Under EcoLur’s Ecological Risk Model, this indicator will be disastrous for the river.
