840 Items of Fish Illegally Caught in Sevan Seized

A total of 840 whitefish were found and confiscated on December 25-26, when hunting of this species was banned due to the whitefish spawning season. According to Nature Protection and Mining Inspection Body, the confiscated fish were handed over to the military units of the Ministry of Defense and "Sevan Mental Health Center" SNCO. Measures are being taken to identify and prosecute those who hunted illegally.

Despite the ban and control in the markets, the sale of three whitefish continues for 1000 AMD. The caviar is sold separately. "There are a lot of fish in Sevan. What can we do to not get caught? We also want to live, to celebrate the New Year for our children,” the sellers said.

Reminder: in 2021, the industrial whitefish hunt in Lake Sanaa started from May 14 until October 15. Then, on December 20, 2021, during the whitefish spawning season, the responsible government agencies began to exercise strict control to prevent illegal hunting of whitefish from Lake Sevan. Control measures will be carried out by the employees of Nature Protection and Mining Inspection Body, “Sevan National Park” SNCO of Environment Ministry,  RA Police, Gegharkunik Regional Municipality until January 15, 2022.
