How Czech Environmentalists Saved European Ground Squirrel from Poisoning

One of the conservation areas of the European ground squirrel is European Ground Squirrel Area near Miroslav. The place also serves as an airport for small planes, which does not interfere with the living conditions of the ground squirrel. In May 2022, Armenian specialists visited "European Ground Squirrel Area" within the framework of EU "Strengthened protection and sustainable use of biodiversity in Armenia in line with European standards" Twinning program to learn about the Czech experience of ground squirrel conservation.

In the Czech Republic, the European ground squirrel is protected by national and European legislation. An action plan has been developed for this species in the Czech Republic in order to prevent its extinction.

Watching ground squirrels' movements

Zoologist at "European Ground Squirrel Area" Roman Zajiczek noted that it is forbidden by law in the Czech Republic to start construction in any area if ground squirrels live and nest there. This, in turn, caused cases of poisoning of ground squirrels by some businessmen.

Czech environmentalists had to resort to trickery by announcing on television that video surveillance is carried out in all areas where ground squirrels inhabit. By saving the ground squirrel, other species are also saved.
