Private SPANs: Best Finnish Experience for Armenia To Preserve Biodiversity

The management of specifically protected areas of nature (SPANs) varies in different countries. Finland has adopted a unique policy it in this sense, allowing its citizens to own their own SPAN. 

The area of ​​protected areas owned by Dr. Petri Alroth, Director of Biodiversity Center of Finnish Environment Institute "SYKE", makes up more than 96 hectares.

Within the frameworks of EU Twinning “Strengthened protection and sustainable use of biodiversity in Armenia in line with the European standards” project, Dr. Petri Alroth presented to the journalist of “EcoLur” Informational NGO Kristina Ter-Matevosyan presented the features of preserving biodiversity in his country.

According to him, the territories have a legal status. "In this case, the ownership of the land remains private, but the state compensates about 70% of the value of the trees as an incentive," he outlined.
